About the IIT JAM Biological Sciences exam
The IIT JAM Biological Sciences (BL) paper is one of the seven test papers of the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT JAM), a national computer-based entrance exam held once a year by one of the IITs on rotation. It is the entry route to M.Sc. programmes in the life sciences at the IITs, IISc and other institutes that accept JAM scores. Eligibility, seats, important dates and the cut-offs are in the official JAM information brochure and change every cycle, so always check them there.
Every JAM paper has 60 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours, in three sections: Section A has 30 single-answer multiple-choice questions (10 of 1 mark and 20 of 2 marks); Section B has 10 multiple-select questions of 2 marks; Section C has 20 numerical-answer questions (10 of 1 mark and 10 of 2 marks). A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (⅓ for a 1-mark and ⅔ for a 2-mark question); multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry no negative marking. The test is computer-based and in English.
The Biological Sciences paper tests biology (cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, evolution, plant biology) together with chemistry, mathematics and physics at the basic level. Questions are conceptual and application-based, so reading a book once is not enough: you need to solve many problems under a time limit.
BL me physiology, ecology aur evolution ke concept-based sawal aate hain, isliye diagrams aur flow-charts banakar revise karo.
How to prepare: Read the core biology chapters in a standard text, solve numerical problems in genetics and ecology, and revise chemistry and maths basics every week. Take our free Biological Sciences mock to find out where you stand, and see the IIT JAM Biotechnology paper too if your plan involves a second subject.
Always check the latest official notification for the current exam pattern, syllabus and eligibility.

IIT JAM Biological Sciences mock test questions with answers
Q1. Which of the following organelles is bounded by a double membrane and contains its own DNA?
Which of the following organelles is bounded by a double membrane and contains its own DNA?
- A. Golgi apparatus
- B. Lysosome
- C. Mitochondrion
- D. Peroxisome
Mitochondria (like chloroplasts) have two membranes and a circular genome of their own.
Q2. Sister chromatids separate from each other during:
Sister chromatids separate from each other during:
- A. Anaphase
- B. Metaphase
- C. Prophase
- D. Telophase
At the metaphase–anaphase transition cohesin is cleaved and the chromatids move to opposite poles in anaphase.
Q3. Proteins that are destined for secretion are synthesised on ribosomes attached to the:
Proteins that are destined for secretion are synthesised on ribosomes attached to the:
- A. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
- B. Rough endoplasmic reticulum
- C. Golgi membrane
- D. Nuclear envelope
A signal sequence directs the ribosome to the rough ER, where the nascent chain enters the lumen.
Q4. A double-stranded DNA fragment contains 20% adenine. The percentage of guanine is:
A double-stranded DNA fragment contains 20% adenine. The percentage of guanine is:
- A. 20%
- B. 60%
- C. 40%
- D. 30%
A = T = 20%, so G + C = 60% and G = 30%.
Q5. An enzyme speeds up a reaction by changing:
An enzyme speeds up a reaction by changing:
- A. The free-energy change of the reaction
- B. The equilibrium constant
- C. The activation energy
- D. The enthalpy change of the reaction
A catalyst lowers the activation energy; the thermodynamics (ΔG, K, ΔH) of the overall reaction are unchanged.
