About the IIT JAM Chemistry exam

The IIT JAM Chemistry (CY) paper is one of the seven test papers of the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT JAM), a national computer-based entrance exam held once a year by one of the IITs on rotation. It is the entry route to M.Sc. Chemistry and related programmes at the IITs, IISc and other institutes that accept JAM scores. Eligibility, seats, important dates and the cut-offs are in the official JAM information brochure and change every cycle, so always check them there.

Every JAM paper has 60 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours, in three sections: Section A has 30 single-answer multiple-choice questions (10 of 1 mark and 20 of 2 marks); Section B has 10 multiple-select questions of 2 marks; Section C has 20 numerical-answer questions (10 of 1 mark and 10 of 2 marks). A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (⅓ for a 1-mark and ⅔ for a 2-mark question); multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry no negative marking. The test is computer-based and in English.

The Chemistry paper tests physical, organic and inorganic chemistry in roughly equal parts, with questions on mechanisms, structure and bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics and coordination chemistry. Questions are conceptual and application-based, so reading a book once is not enough: you need to solve many problems under a time limit.

Chemistry me organic ke mechanisms aur inorganic ke exceptions yaad karne se hi marks aate hain, isliye har week ek mechanism-sheet khud banao.

How to prepare: Split your week across physical, organic and inorganic, practise mechanisms by drawing them out, and finish each topic with previous-year JAM questions. Take our free Chemistry mock to find out where you stand, and see the IIT JAM Physics paper too if your plan involves a second subject.

Always check the latest official notification for the current exam pattern, syllabus and eligibility.

IIT JAM Chemistry mock test questions with answers

  1. Q1. The pH of a 0.01 M solution of the strong acid HCl at 25 °C is:

    The pH of a 0.01 M solution of the strong acid HCl at 25 °C is:

    • A. 1
    • B. 2
    • C. 12
    • D. 0.01

    [H⁺] = 10⁻² M, so pH = 2.

  2. Q2. A first-order reaction has a rate constant of 0.0693 min⁻¹. Its half-life is:

    A first-order reaction has a rate constant of 0.0693 min⁻¹. Its half-life is:

    • A. 1 min
    • B. 6.93 min
    • C. 10 min
    • D. 100 min

    t½ = 0.693/k = 0.693/0.0693 = 10 min.

  3. Q3. For a reaction ΔH = +40 kJ/mol and ΔS = +100 J/(mol K), both independent of temperature. The reaction becomes spontaneous above:

    For a reaction ΔH = +40 kJ/mol and ΔS = +100 J/(mol K), both independent of temperature. The reaction becomes spontaneous above:

    • A. 400 K
    • B. 350 K
    • C. 298 K
    • D. 4000 K

    ΔG = ΔH − TΔS < 0 when T > ΔH/ΔS = 40000/100 = 400 K.

  4. Q4. Under identical conditions the ratio of the effusion rate of H₂ to that of O₂ is:

    Under identical conditions the ratio of the effusion rate of H₂ to that of O₂ is:

    • A. 2
    • B. 16
    • C. 8
    • D. 4

    Graham's law: rate ∝ 1/√M, so the ratio is √(32/2) = 4.

  5. Q5. At 298 K the electrode potential of Cu²⁺/Cu (n = 2) with [Cu²⁺] = 0.01 M is:

    At 298 K the electrode potential of Cu²⁺/Cu (n = 2) with [Cu²⁺] = 0.01 M is:

    • A. E° + 0.0591 V
    • B. E° − 0.0591 V
    • C. E° − 0.0296 V
    • D. E° + 0.0296 V

    E = E° + (0.0591/2) log[Cu²⁺] = E° + 0.02955 × (−2) = E° − 0.0591 V.
