About the IIT JAM Physics exam
The IIT JAM Physics (PH) paper is one of the seven test papers of the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT JAM), a national computer-based entrance exam held once a year by one of the IITs on rotation. It is the entry route to M.Sc. Physics and related integrated or joint programmes at the IITs and to M.Sc. programmes at IISc and other institutes that accept JAM scores. Eligibility, seats, important dates and the cut-offs are in the official JAM information brochure and change every cycle, so always check them there.
Every JAM paper has 60 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours, in three sections: Section A has 30 single-answer multiple-choice questions (10 of 1 mark and 20 of 2 marks); Section B has 10 multiple-select questions of 2 marks; Section C has 20 numerical-answer questions (10 of 1 mark and 10 of 2 marks). A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (⅓ for a 1-mark and ⅔ for a 2-mark question); multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry no negative marking. The test is computer-based and in English.
The Physics paper tests a strong grip on mathematical methods and on classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermal physics, waves and optics, quantum and modern physics, and basic electronics. Questions are conceptual and application-based, so reading a book once is not enough: you need to solve many problems under a time limit.
Physics paper me numerical aur concept dono chalte hain: mathematical methods pe pakad rakho kyunki wahi baaki sections ke sawal fast banata hai.
How to prepare: Revise one section a week from a standard B.Sc. text, solve previous-year JAM questions chapter-wise, and keep a short sheet of formulas and constants for quick revision. Take our free Physics mock to find out where you stand, and see the IIT JAM Mathematics paper too if your plan involves a second subject.
Always check the latest official notification for the current exam pattern, syllabus and eligibility.

IIT JAM Physics mock test questions with answers
Q1. The eigenvalues of the matrix [[2, 1], [1, 2]] are:
The eigenvalues of the matrix [[2, 1], [1, 2]] are:
- A. 0 and 3
- B. 1 and 2
- C. 1 and 3
- D. 2 and 4
The characteristic equation (2 − λ)² − 1 = 0 gives λ = 2 ± 1, that is 1 and 3.
Q2. The value of the integral of exp(−x²) from −∞ to +∞ is:
The value of the integral of exp(−x²) from −∞ to +∞ is:
- A. π
- B. √π
- C. 1
- D. π/2
This is the standard Gaussian integral, equal to √π.
Q3. For the position vector r = x î + y ĵ + z k̂, the divergence ∇·r equals:
For the position vector r = x î + y ĵ + z k̂, the divergence ∇·r equals:
- A. 3
- B. 1
- C. 0
- D. r
∂x/∂x + ∂y/∂y + ∂z/∂z = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.
Q4. For any twice-differentiable scalar field φ, the curl of its gradient, ∇ × (∇φ), is:
For any twice-differentiable scalar field φ, the curl of its gradient, ∇ × (∇φ), is:
- A. ∇²φ
- B. ∇φ
- C. φ
- D. The zero vector
The mixed partial derivatives cancel in every component, so the curl of a gradient vanishes identically.
Q5. The residue of f(z) = 1/[z(z − 1)] at the simple pole z = 0 is:
The residue of f(z) = 1/[z(z − 1)] at the simple pole z = 0 is:
- A. 1
- B. −1
- C. 0
- D. 2
Residue = lim z→0 of z·f(z) = 1/(0 − 1) = −1.
