About the IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics exam
The IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics (MS) paper is one of the seven test papers of the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT JAM), a national computer-based entrance exam held once a year by one of the IITs on rotation. It is the entry route to M.Sc. programmes in statistics and data-related fields at the IITs and other institutes that accept JAM scores. Eligibility, seats, important dates and the cut-offs are in the official JAM information brochure and change every cycle, so always check them there.
Every JAM paper has 60 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours, in three sections: Section A has 30 single-answer multiple-choice questions (10 of 1 mark and 20 of 2 marks); Section B has 10 multiple-select questions of 2 marks; Section C has 20 numerical-answer questions (10 of 1 mark and 10 of 2 marks). A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (⅓ for a 1-mark and ⅔ for a 2-mark question); multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry no negative marking. The test is computer-based and in English.
The Mathematical Statistics paper tests calculus and linear algebra as the base, with most of the weight on probability, random variables and distributions, and statistical inference. Questions are conceptual and application-based, so reading a book once is not enough: you need to solve many problems under a time limit.
MS paper me probability aur distributions ke sawal sabse zyada aate hain; moments, MGF aur standard distributions ki table ratne se pehle unka derivation samjho.
How to prepare: Master calculus and matrices quickly, then spend most time on distributions and inference problems, and check every answer with a quick sanity bound. Take our free Mathematical Statistics mock to find out where you stand, and see the IIT JAM Mathematics paper too if your plan involves a second subject.
Always check the latest official notification for the current exam pattern, syllabus and eligibility.

IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics mock test questions with answers
Q1. The limit of sin(3x)/x as x → 0 is:
The limit of sin(3x)/x as x → 0 is:
- A. 0
- B. 1
- C. 3
- D. 1/3
sin(3x)/x = 3·sin(3x)/(3x) → 3 × 1 = 3.
Q2. The value of ∫₀^∞ e^(−2x) dx is:
The value of ∫₀^∞ e^(−2x) dx is:
- A. 1/4
- B. 1/2
- C. 1
- D. 2
The integral equals [−e^(−2x)/2] from 0 to ∞ = 1/2.
Q3. The determinant of the matrix [[1, 2, 0], [0, 3, 4], [0, 0, 5]] is:
The determinant of the matrix [[1, 2, 0], [0, 3, 4], [0, 0, 5]] is:
- A. 15
- B. 12
- C. 9
- D. 30
The matrix is upper triangular, so det = 1 × 3 × 5 = 15.
Q4. The sum of the series Σ (1/2)ⁿ for n = 0 to ∞ is:
The sum of the series Σ (1/2)ⁿ for n = 0 to ∞ is:
- A. 1
- B. 3/2
- C. 4
- D. 2
A geometric series with first term 1 and ratio 1/2 sums to 1/(1 − 1/2) = 2.
Q5. The maximum value of f(x) = x(1 − x) on [0, 1] is:
The maximum value of f(x) = x(1 − x) on [0, 1] is:
- A. 1/2
- B. 1/4
- C. 1/8
- D. 1
f′ = 1 − 2x = 0 at x = 1/2 and f(1/2) = 1/4.
